What is IEC, Pre-Requisites for Applying for IEC and Documents Required for Register IEC Code

What is IEC:- An Importer -Exporter Code (IEC) is a key business identification number which mandatory for export from India or Import to India. No export or import shall be made by any person without obtaining an IEC unless specifically exempted. For services exports however, IEC shall be not be necessary except when the service provider is taking benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy.

Consequent upon introduction of GST, IEC being issued is the same as the PAN of the firm. However, the IEC will still be separately issued by DGFT based on an application. The nature of the firm obtaining an IEC may be any of the follows- Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, Limited Company, Trust, HUF, Society.

Pre-Requisites for Applying for IEC:- IEC may be applied on behalf of a firm which may be a Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, Limited Company, Trust, HUF, Society. Firm must have a PAN, bank account in the name of the firm and a valid address before applying. Address may be physically verified by the DGFT on issuance of the IEC. Please keep your PAN, bank details and firm details ready before applying.


Documents Required for Register IEC Code

·        PAN Card

·        Bank Account Details

·        Aadhar Card (In case of Proprietorship)

·        Address Proof document (like Electricity Bill. Rent Agreement, Consent Letter, Ownership Documents)

·        Mobile No.

·        Gmail Address

·        Certificate of Incorporation in case of Company

 

Steps involved in IEC (Import/Export Code) registration

·        Visit the DGFT website (WWW.DGFT.GOV.IN)

·        Click on the ‘Apply for IEC’ tab on the homepage.

·        A new page will open Click on the ‘Register’ option. Enter the required details and click on the ‘Sent OTP’ button

·        Enter the OTP and click on the ‘Register’ button.

·        Upon successful validation of the OTP, you will receive a notification containing the User-ID and Password which you can change after logging into the DGFT website.

·        After registering on the DGFT website, login to the website and Click on the ‘Apply for IEC’ option on the DGFT website dashboard.

·        Click on New Application button and enter the general information, details of proprietor/partner/director/Karta/managing trustee, bank information, other details, attach Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) and make the payment.

·        After successful payment, it will be redirected to the DGFT website. The receipt will be displayed. Download the receipt for future reference.

·        The IEC Code will be generated and sent in the email. It can be downloaded after logging in to the DGFT website and clicking the ‘Print IEC’ option under the ‘IEC Profile Management'.

IEC Profile:- The Importer-Exporter Profile captures important details with respect to the importing and exporting firm as registered with DGFT. The IEC is the primary part of the profile. In addition to the IEC , details such as RCMC, Industrial Registration Details, Status holder details, Past export performance etc, are captured under this profile.
